Kerala, the land of green magic, is a narrow, fertile strip on the south-west coast of India, sandwiched between the Lakshadweep Sea and the Western Ghats. The landscape is dominated by rice fields, mango, cashew nut trees and coconut palms. The Western Ghats, with their dense tropical forests, misty peaks, extensive ridges and ravines, have sheltered Kerala from invaders, but at the same time, have encouraged maritime contact with the outside world. Kerela The Historic Trade CentrePeople from distant lands have been coming to Kerala since ancient times. They came in search of spices, sandalwood and ivory. Long before Vasco da Gama led the Portuguese to India, the coast had been known to the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Arabs and the Chinese. Enduring contact with people from overseas has resulted in the successful blending of various cultures, which gives the state a cosmopolitan outlook. Ahead Always!he present-day state of Kerala was created in 1956 from Travancore, Kochi (Cochin) and Malabar. Malabar was formerly a part of Madras State, while both Travancore and Cochin were princely states ruled by Maharajas. An early concern for public welfare gave Kerala a head start, and resulted in the state being one of the most progressive, literate and highly educated states in India. KERALA AYURVEDA

Kerala Ayurveda» Ayurveda - Eight branches of knowledge» Basic Principles of Ayurved» Kerala Ayurveda Treatment» Key to Ayurveda Therapies
Ayurveda is the ancient Indian medical science, the origin of which can be traced back to more than 5000 years. The source of Ayurveda are the vedas , the oldest available classics.Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word, derived from two roots: ayur, which means life, and veda, which mean knowledge. It is fair to say that Ayurveda is the science of life. Ayurveda is a science dealing not only with treatment of some diseases but is a complete way of life. It is only system of medicine which incorporates suggestions and remedies for both healthy and diseased people. Centuries before the World Health Organization recognized that health is not merely the physical well being and just the absence of disease, ayurveda was dealing with the mental, physical and social well being of an individual.
The BodyAccording to Ayurveda every individual is made up of five elements, namely :--» Prithvi or earth.» Apa or water» Tejas or fire» Vayu or air» Akash or space.
The structural aspect of the body is made up of these five elements, but the functional aspect of the body is governed by three biological humors. Ether and air combine to form what is known in Ayurveda as the Vata dosha. Vata governs the principle of movement and therefore can be seen as the force which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and elimination. Fire and water combine to form the Pitta dosha. The Pitta dosha governs the process of transformation or metabolism. The digestion of food in our body is an example of Pitta function. Pitta is also responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue systems as well as cellular metabolism. Finally, the water and earth combine to form the Kapha dosha. There are seven body types: mono-types (vata, pitta or kapha predominant), dual types (vata-pitta, pitta-kapha or, kapha-vata), and equal types, (vata, pitta and kapha in equal proportions). Every individual has a unique combination of these three doshas. To understand the uniqueness of every individual is the very basis of ayurveda. The MindAyurveda classifies human temperaments into three basic qualities: satvic, rajasic and tamasic. Satvic qualities imply purity and clarity of perception which are responsible for goodness and happiness. Rajas is responsible for all movements, and activities. It leads to the life of sensual enjoyment, pleasure and pain, effort and restlessness. Tamas is darkness, inertia, heaviness and materialistic attitudes. There is a constant interplay of these three gunas (qualities) in the individual consciousness, but the relative predominance of either satva, rajas, or tamas is responsible for individual psychological constitution. The Disease ProcessAccording to Ayurveda, health is a state of balance between the body, mind and consciousness. Within the body, Ayurveda recognizes the three doshas( bodily humors) vata, pitta and kapha; seven dhatus(tissues), blood, plasma, fat, muscle, bone, nerve, and reproductive; three malas(wastes), feces, urine and sweat; and agni, the energy of metabolism. Disease is a condition of disharmony in any of these factors. The root cause of imbalance, or disease, is an aggravation of dosha, vata-pitta-kapha. ConclusionAyurveda is the system of medicine incorporating centuries of wisdom in it. The emphasis here is on ways to promote health rather than just treat disease. The beauty of the system is that every individual is unique rather than being just another case of particular disease. It is one of the few systems of medicine taking mental, emotional and spiritual well being into account. All the suggestions and remedies prescribed are totally in conjunction with nature.

AYUREVEDA-EIGHT BRANCHES OF KNOWLEDGE

Ayurveda was evolved in India around 600 BC and this is a complete natural healing system that depends on the diagnosis of the person's body humours to achieve the right balance and thus regain immunity and good health. Making it the natural way to perfect health and harmony of life. Kerala's natural abundance with its equable climate is best suited for Ayurveda's curative ad restorative programs. Kerala is the only place on earth where it is practiced with absolute authenticity and dedication. The word AYUR literally means ' life ' and VEDA means ' the science of knowledge '. Ayurveda briefly explains the knowledge of the do's and don'ts one has to follow, which flavours the well being of each individual to lead a healthy, happy, comfortable and advantageous life both physically, mentally and socially. Ayurveda is also known as Asthanga Veda. The word literally means "Eight branches of knowledge" as it is divided into eight specialized branches, which are :
1. Kaya Chikilsa - General Medicine2. Kaumara Britya - Pediatrics3. Graha Chikilsa - Psychiatry and psycho somatic diseases4. Shalakya Tantra - Diseases of eye, ear, head, nose, throat and its surgery5. Shalya Tantra - General Surgery6. Agada Tantra - Toxicology7. Rasayana Chikilsa - Rejuvenation Therapy8. Vajeekarana Chikilsa - Aphrodisiac Therapy
The objectives of Ayurveda is to establish prime health in every living being, physically, mentally and spiritually. The basic concepts and fundamental principles aim at establishing such a condition through correct and thorough knowledge of healthy living. Ayurveda states wrong behaviour and food habits disturbs the harmony and lead to diseases. The basic principles of treatment in Ayurveda is to eliminate the internal disease causing factors of diseases.

The literal meaning of Ayurveda is 'Science of Life'. The system is passed through traditionally from master to disciples orally. Ayurveda is based on the Vedic philosophy of healthy living as prescribed in the 'Atharvaveda', a Vedic text on Hindu philosophy. It is a system of preventive medicine which provides remedies for various illnesses and prescribes ideal lifestyles to prevent the onset of sickness and disease. The majority of Ayurvedic medicines are not mass produced, as Ayurveda treatment is based on the premise that every person has an individualized constitution and medicines have to be tailored to suit the individual. To stay healthy, the Tridoshas need to function in harmony with each other, as well as with the five basic elements of the Universe (Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Ether). Ayurveda does not 'kill' an infection like antibiotics but instead it strengthens body's immune system to fight disease or infection.
